#NationalNonprofitDay: The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment

The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment (formerly The Autism Academy of South Carolina) is a non-profit organization that provides resources and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families to help them live their fullest lives. The organization provides the Midlands with much-needed therapy services, social skills training and applied behavior analysis for individuals with ASD.

In 2015, The Unumb Center experienced severe damage to their building after extensive flooding, leaving the building in need of both structural repair and a cosmetic face-lift.

“The Leadership Columbia Class of 2016’s generosity came during our greatest hour of need. Due to significant water damage following the 2015 floods, we evacuated our building. While we continued to provide medically necessary services from a temporary location, The Leadership Columbia Class of 2016 renovated our building allowing us to return within four months. Not only did they repair damage, they transformed our building leaving it in better condition than it was pre-flood,” said Kera Breitenstein, The Unumb Center’s public relations and marketing manager.

The Leadership Columbia class conducted a major overhaul, installing new flooring throughout the building, replacing damaged ceiling tiles and renovating a bathroom. The class gave the renovation a personal touch by placing name plates on doors throughout the building and constructing a new playground area for the children.

“We are tremendously grateful to the Leadership Columbia Class of 2016. We continue to pay it forward by fulfilling our mission of helping individuals with autism reach their full potential by providing comprehensive, evidence-based services and collaborative solutions for the needs of the autism community. Since the project was completed, we have expanded our services to include diagnostic testing, individual and family therapy, behavioral feeding therapy, summer camps, social skills groups, and job training.
