The
Carolina Cup - (803) 432-6513
Established in 1930, The
Carolina Cup is one of the two premier steeplechase races in the
Southeast and is hailed as South Carolina’s largest sporting/social
event. Camden welcomes more than 70,00 visitors from all over the
state. The ‘Cup’ is known for its extravagant tailgating parties
where all the ladies wear bright sundresses and straw hats. Gates open
at 9 a.m. as picnickers roll in to prepare for the six afternoon races.
Only a 45-minute drive from Columbia, many Columbia residents have made
the ‘Cup’ an annual tradition. This year the Carolina Cup will be
held April 1, 2006.
South Carolina State Fair - (803) 799-3387
For the 136th year this October,
the State Fair comes to Columbia for two weeks. Rides, food and
games attract local and widespread attendants. Exhibits featuring art,
crafts, flowers and livestock cover the fairgrounds. A large rocket near
the front entrance is a popular landmark. Groups wishing to gather at a
common location often say, “Meet me at the Rocket.” The 2006
fair will be held October 5th – 15th.
St.
Patrick’s Day in Five Points
Come to Columbia’s
own Five Points and enjoy the St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
Festival-goers fill the streets of Five Points and enjoy a much-improved
and enhanced event. The goal of the Five Points Association, during its
23 years of St. Pat’s in Five Points, is to improve upon the offerings
in all areas of the day’s events to create a more family friendly
environment, showcase this special area of our city, support local
charities, involve previously overlooked constituents, extend the reach
of festival participants, while retaining the charm and flare that the
people of the state have come to expect from St. Pat’s in Five Points.
The 2006 event will be held March 18th.
Columbia Festival of
the Arts
The Columbia Festival of the Arts celebrates the arts and culture in
the Midlands region of South Carolina. The festival will be held April
27th through May 6th, 2007 and will highlight visual arts, dance, music
and theatre.
